National Guard promotion

Major General Patrick A. Murphy, adjutant general for the state of New York, announced recently that Ariel Nieves of Bethlehem has been promoted to the rank of specialist.

Nieves is serving with the 145th Maintenance Company, New York Army National Guard.

Army National Guard promotions are based on overall performance, attitude, leadership ability and development potential.

Moravian College alumni honored

The Moravian College Alumni Association honored six alumni and four current students at the 15th annual alumni awards ceremony Dec.12. Alyson Remsing ’03, the association president, was master of ceremonies.

The Comenius Award was given to Odell Guyton, Esq., ’77, for his accomplishments in the field of law, including his appointment as assistant U.S. attorney for the eastern district of Pennsylvania Other honorees were alumni board president-elect Jessica Preston Grillo, ’08, emerging leader award; sculptor Jonathan E. Latiano, ‘06, young alumni achievement award; educator Joseph M. Shosh PhD, ’88, the Benigna education award; 39-year volunteer Amy Lesser Mende ’76, medallion of merit (posthumous); and human welfare activist Steven J. Milligan, ‘86, Haupert humanitarian award.

The alumni association recognized four full-time Moravian College students for their superior scholastic merit and the outstanding contributions they have made to campus life and to the community. This year’s fellows are Meghan Cote of Stewartsville, N.J., David Pasquale of Orefield, Kimberly Polanco of Reading and Kate Polles of Nazareth.

GLVMA awards announced

Dave Fry and the late “Jolly” Joe Timmer will be honored at the Lehigh Valley Music Awards event at 4 p.m. March 6, at the ArtsQuest Center, SteelStacks, 101 Founders Way.

Timmer and Fry will receive Lifetime Achievement Awards in recognition of their 50-plus years each in the music industry. The Lesson Center, School of Rock and the Lehigh Valley Charter HS for the Arts are the winners of the Board of Directors Awards for work with youth in music

Bethlehem resident Dave Fry began performing folk music while attending Lehigh University in the early ‘70s. In 1976, he co-founded Godfrey Daniels coffeehouse and listening club on Bethlehem’s SouthSide.

He performs, is a teaching artist, and has also been a folk music radio programmer for more than 40 years.

The late Joseph “Jolly Joe” Timmer is a member of the International Polka Association’s Polka Hall of Fame, was the owner of WGPA Sunny 1100 AM radio and of Jolly Joe Timmer’s Grove near Bath. In the music business for more than 60 years, he and his orchestra performed at almost every Musikfest since 1984. His award will be presented to his wife, Dorothy, and the members of his band.

Twenty Year Veteran Award honorees include eight-time Grammy nominee Frank DiBussolo, The Blue Tarp Wranglers bassist Nick Franclik, The ColourSound lead singer Doug Batt and guitarist Sean Hieter, James Supra Blues Band drummer Allen Wanamaker and guitarist and The Lesson Center owner Jeff Roberts.
