Auditions for the Allentown Public Theatre production of “The Island” are 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Jan. 9, St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 417 N. Seventh St., Allentown.
The apartheid-era drama written by Athol Fugard, John Kani and Winston Ntshona is inspired by a true story. It is set in an unnamed prison based on South Africa’s Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was held for 27 years.
In the drama, two cellmates, one whose release draws near and the other who will be in prison for many years, spend their days at physical labor and nights rehearsing in their cell for a performance of Sophocles’ “Antigone” for other prisoners.
The play is written for two black men, although women are being considered for the roles.
The roles demand a very high level of acting skil, according to Anna Russell, Artistic Director, Allentown Public Theatre. The play is part of the area “Voices Of Conscience” series.
If interested actors cannot make the audition date, a second round of auditions will be held Jan. 30.
