Northampton Community College
Major gifts director appointed
Robert W. Wolfenden, of Coopersburg, has been named director of major gifts at Northampton Community College. He will work closely with the college president, vice president for institutional advancement and members of the college’s foundation board in establishing and maintaining relationships with donors supportive of Northampton’s commitment to providing excellent, accessible and comprehensive learning experiences tailored to the communities the college serves.
The appointee was a Lehigh University assistant vice president for alumni relations and annual giving, and prior to that, as director of alumni benefits and services, alumni career development and education, and young alumni programming. During his 19 years there, he worked in admissions, was a coach on the men’s soccer team and was a professor of military science.
He held numerous leadership positions during his 21year active duty U.S. Army career. He earned a bachelor of science degree at Norwich University, Northfield, Vt., and a master’s degree in counseling from Providence College in Rhode Island.
College among top 100 for degrees granted
In a national survey, Northampton Community College has been listed in Community College Week as having graduated the most students for degrees granted in the following academic areas in 2013-14: Communication, Journalism and Related Programs; Communication Technology/Technicians and Support Services; Criminal Justice and Corrections; Education; and Protective Services (homeland security, law enforcement, firefighting and related services).

Penn State Lehigh Valley
Writing best practices workshop Jan. 30
The Lehigh Valley Writing Project (LVWP) will host its annual Best Practices in Teaching Writing Conference from 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Penn State Lehigh Valley campus in Center Valley.
The conference features interactive workshops and presentations for teachers to share professional teaching practices. The keynote presentation, “Teaching, Revising, and Assessing Digital Writing,” will be given by Troy Hicks. Hicks will also sign copies of his books during lunch at the conference.
A former middle school teacher, Hicks collaborates with K–12 colleagues and explores how they implement newer literacies in their classrooms. He has authored numerous Heinemann titles including “Crafting Digital Writing,” “The Digital Writing Workshop” as well as a co-authored “Because Digital Writing Matters,” “Create, Compose, Connect!” and “Connected Reading.”
Hicks is a professor of English at Central Michigan University (CMU) and focuses his work on the teaching of writing, literacy and technology, and teacher education and professional development.
