Albert Emerson Reese
Albert Emerson Reese, 94, of Bethlehem, died Dec. 21, 2015, at St. Luke’s University Hospital Fountain Hill, following a stroke. Born in Nesquehoning, he was the son of the late Hannah (Griffith) and Albert E. Reese Sr. He was the husband of the late Margaret R. (Koomar) Reese for 69 years.
He was a radio mechanic in the U.S. Army, and earned a sharpshooter badge.
He earned a bachelor of science degree in commerce from Rider College.
He worked in accounting for various businesses including Lehigh Navigation Coal Company, Union Bank and Bethlehem Steel. After retiring, he was a full-time custodian at First Baptist Church, Bethlehem. He was a full-time driver for Meals on Wheels, Northampton County.
He was a dishwasher and part-time accountant for the family businesses, Jumbar’s Restaurant, Bethlehem, and as an accountant at the White House restaurant in Calais, Vt.
He played the trumpet and sang in many groups, including the barbershop quartets “The Out of Towners” and “The Inter-statesmen”. He was in the Allentown-Bethlehem chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Signing in America, and was named the 1970 Barbershopper of the Year.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Bethlehem, where he was a soloist and sang in the church choir .
He recently studied astronomy and mathematics through Great Online Courses.
He is survived by three daughters, Anne at home, Jeanne of Bethlehem and Joan and her husband James Finnen of Bethlehem; a son, Jim and his wife Anne Bean of Bethlehem; a son-in-law, Paul Hoffert of Bethlehem; two grandsons, Ben and Harry Hoffert of Bethlehem; a granddaughter, Emily Hoffert and her wife Jennifer Dize of Bethlehem; a grandson, Jesse Reese of Fountain Hill; a great-granddaughter, Madison King of Allentown; five step-grandchildren; a step great-grandson; nieces; nephews; three brothers-in-law, John and Francis X. Koomar and Stephen and wife Eva “Mitzi,” all of Nesquehoning; and three sisters-in-law, Jane Koomar of Nesquehoning, Bernadine Koomar of Peotone, Ill. and Theresa Koomar of Lehighton.
He was predeceased by a sister, Catherine of Nesquehoning; and a daughter, Mary Hoffert of Bethlehem.
