Making their debut

Dec. 13 was a day of new beginnings for a local band and St. Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church.

The praise band, At The Cross, made its debut during the 11:30 a.m. Mass. The band is comprised of Whitehall-Coplay School District students and a parent.

Vocalist PhylliciaAnn Beitler, also known as Peaschee, guitarist Andrew Smith and pianist Michael Smith performed two songs - one at the start of Mass and one at the end. David Smith, father to Andrew and Michael, plays the bass in the band.

The group formed more than four years ago and plays music ranging from The Beatles to Metallica with their regular rock group called Solid Water.

The Rev. Edward J. Essig addressed the congregation: “We are trying to incorporate more contemporary music by the praise band.” Essig said the transition would be slow.

“There are many different ways to express our worship,” he said. “This will be something special for all of us.”

The talented group of musicians are able to play multiple instruments. Andrew plays guitar and bass and sings; Michael plays guitar, bass and keyboard; David plays bass and guitar and sings; Beitler sings and plays flute. She also is a guitarist in the making.

The group has a deep musical history, with both the Smith and Beitler families having musical roots back to their parents, grandparents and cousins.

Andrew told The Press he enjoys “bringing the things we like to do into the church.”

“Praying to God in song” is something Beitler likes to do, she said.

Michael said he simply enjoys “just playing.”
