Coplay: Tree pickup now available

The first of several Christmas tree pickups by borough public works crews took place yesterday, Dec. 30. Pickups will continue throughout January.

The trees will be used for mulch.

The borough does not impose an additional fee for tree pickups.

Coplay Saengerbund, 205 S. Fifth St., celebrates Dec. 31 with a “New Year’s Eve Explosion” event, beginning with a hot buffet and followed with music by deejay Jerry “Hottub” Greene.

There also will be a surprise fountain and a champagne toast at midnight.

The evening will bring family and friends together.

Ushering in 2016 in Coplay is a tradition. Many will stay home and watch TV as the ball drops at Times Square in New York City; others will enjoy eating out, such as at Samuel Owens Restaurant, which is becoming a tradition for many couples.

I can remember when small polka groups visited homes across town in the early-morning hours on New Year’s Day. Special music of trumpets and accordions could be heard.
