Commissioners will choose new president at Jan. 4 board meeting

Whitehall Township Commissioners President Linda Snyder has taken herself out of the running for another two-year term as president of the seven-member board.

The township on Monday will have its reorganization meeting for the township’s newly elected officials from the Nov. 3 general election.

The 8 p.m. meeting will have the individuals elected in November take their oath of office administered at a ceremony presided by Magisterial District Judge Robert Halal.

Re-elected Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. will be seated for another four-year term with Commissioners-Elect Democrats Philip Ginder, Phillips Armstrong and Dennis Hower and Republican newcomer Jeff Dutt.

Snyder did not give any reason for not seeking the presidency, an office she has held for more than a decade.

The most senior member on the board, Snyder will have 28-1/2 years as a commissioner at the conclusion of 2018, when her present four-year term ends.

There have been reports Armstrong will have the board’s support as commissioners president. He had been serving in an appointed capacity until he won a four-year term in the fall, garnering the highest number of votes of those running for commissioner.

Ginder, who will begin his 17th year as a commissioner, is the board’s vice president, a post he may again hold when the board selects its officers.

Hower is the present board secretary.

The only other business to be discussed at the reorganization meeting will be the appointments of a solicitor and an engineer, positions now held by Charles Fonzone and Frank Clark, respectively.
