WHS swim teams off to 2-0 start

The Whitehall swim teams beat up on Allen in a meet from last week.

Not only is the team winning matches, but also qualifying swimmers for districts.

“We have been able to establish a District 11 qualifier in every event so far,” head coach Pete Rile said. “We have been able to produce a combined district qualifier list of three boys and three girls to date, and have come close to breaking a number of the boys school records.”

The boys were 98-64 winners over the Canaries.

Felix Figueroa, Jordan Rivera and Michael Haggerty were all double-winners for the boys. Figueroa won the 50 free in 24.69 and also the 100 butterfly in 1:02.37. Rivera was first in the 100 free in 55.74 and also won the 100 breast in 1:07.09. Haggerty won the 200 free in 1:59.47 and also the 500 free in 5:27.34.

Other winners for the boys were Michael Haggerty in the 200 free in 1:59.47; Dan Jablonski in the 200 IM in 2:13.29 and Jack Yadush in the 100 back in 1:06.68.

Rivera, Jablonski, Figueroa and Haggerty made up the winning 200 free relay team with a time of 1:42.94 while Haggerty, Yadush, Figueroa and Jablonski took the 400 free relay event in 3:54.17.

The girls won every event in their meet and had eight individual winners on their way to a 115-51 victory.

Mairead Doyle took the 200 free in 2:10.05; Alexus Merkert won the 200 IM in 2:31.52; Steph Setar won the 50 free in 26.67; Rachael Alulis captured the 100 butterfly in 1:14.28; Alex Dorner touched first in the 100 free in 1:01.82; Grace Sullivan was tops in the 500 free; Autumn Kidulic won the 100 back in 1:13.31 and Marth Giletto was the winner in the 100 breast.

Setar, Kidulic, Merkert and Sullivan won the 200 medley relay in 2:01.9 while Merkert, Doyle, Madison Lyle and Sullivan won the 200 free relay in 1:53.19. Kidulic, Katie Lutterschmidt, Rasha Abdouche and Setar were the winning team in the 400 free in 4:25.38.

For Rile, he’s thrilled with the good start for both teams.

“We have been extremely pleased to start both boys and girls teams with two wins and no defeats,” he said. “The teams are fitting well together both in setting good early season times as well as becoming very close as a team, establishing senior leadership.”

The team’s next match is against Liberty on Tuesday but it comes past the early Press holiday deadlines.

“We expect to have some new records against Liberty,” Rile added.
