Postal carriers in town didn’t have their sacks brimming with Christmas cards sent to families and friends across the borough, a trend that has been spiraling downward for years.

Postal officials say the cause is because of higher costs of greeting cards and stamps. The new trend seems to be holiday greetings via email. However, packages being delivered by the post office and private carriers continues to increase as online shopping is increasing with each season.

There are still some in the borough who remember the 1940s and ‘50s when the mail carrier made two rounds daily to each residence because of the heavy load of Christmas cards being mailed.

While snow has not been the topic thus far in the borough, weather predictors say snow and ice will arrive soon since the first full day of winter was Tuesday, and temperatures are dropping.

The borough is requesting youngsters willing to shovel snow off sidewalks to provide the borough office with their names and phone numbers. The same request goes out to residents, mainly seniors, who are looking for someone to clear their sidewalks when snow begins to fall.

With the organization formed to return Sammy Balliet Stadium to its former prominence in the region for baseball playoffs, fundraising has begun for a new electric scoreboard and stadium lighting.

The lights have been off for several years because of their deteriorating condition.

For information on donating, contact Ed Filipovits at baseballnutflip@coplayborough.org.

Hoagie operations by volunteers is not only a fundraiser for the club, but also for schools, athletic associations and others.
