Whitehall Township Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr., at the Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners meeting on Monday, had some good news to share for the township public works department and West Catasauqua Fire Company but also had to report that an additional $50,000 is needed for repairs of Parkview Pool in Hokendauqua.
Hozza in his address said the public works department now has an additional salt shed on the campus, so when snow and ice begin to pose problems on township roads this winter, the extra supply should keep streets passable and safe.
The second piece of good news was that West Catasauqua Fire Company will be receiving a brand-new $543,180 Pierce fire truck. It should be built and delivered in 2016. Commissioners voted unanimously to award Pierce Manufacturing the fire truck contract, which the township secured via the COSTARS state cooperative purchasing program.
Sometimes good news comes with bad news as well.
“I don’t want to be the Grinch, but I have to,” Hozza told the commissioners.
The mayor said another $50,000 is needed for repairs of the pool walls and tiles. Contractors on the job found that repairs and rehabilitation of the pool years back were now posing problems with the concrete at the pool. The township at a previous meeting had agreed to the repairs, including masonry and upgrades, costing in excess of $100,000.
In other news, the asbestos contamination area in the basement of the municipal building was recently completed by a private environmental company. Access to the basement is now permitted.
