LHS and FHS learn from opening losses

Nobody likes to lose, but there was a silver lining to Liberty’s 57-47 defeat to Ridley Saturday afternoon at the Steel City Challenge held at Moravian College.

The Hurricanes faced a talented District One opponent and ultimately didn’t have enough fire power against one of last year’s final four teams from the District One tournament.

Alex Serrano scored a career-high 17 points for the Hurricanes, who took Saturday’s defeat on the chin.

“I thought Ridley was terrific,” said ’Canes head coach Chad Landis. “They were a very good team and shot the ball really well. It was a good experience for us to see how we react to certain situations.”

Ridley’s Julian Wing led all scorers with 18 points, while Amir Griffin chipped in 10 points to be the only other Hurricane to reach double digits.

The Hurricanes also lost senior Chance Neilly with an ankle fracture in their season opener, which will cause him to miss action into at least January.

Liberty took on Wissahickon last night before playing their EPC season opener Thursday night at home against Easton.

The ’Canes then play Allen on Sunday in the Yasso-Rothrock Christmas City Classic.

“You never want to lose, but Ridley was a good test for us to open the season,” Landis said. “For some of our guys, it’s just about getting accustomed to the pace of the game.”

Freedom (1-1) was able to get two games under their belt over the weekend, splitting their contests at the eighth annual Jeff Dailey Memorial Tip-Off at Notre Dame.

The Pates let a 24-point first half lead slip away during a 49-44 defeat to Philadelphia’s Ben Franklin.

Nick King led the Pates in scoring with 14 points against the Electrons, but Najee Cash took the turn to lead the Pates in scoring with 13 points the following night during a 41-33 win over Palisades.

Freedom will see what they’ve learned from the weekend with three league games this week, as they took on Easton Tuesday night, followed by tomorrow night’s tilt against Dieruff and Sunday’s contest with Central Catholic.
