Repertory Dance Theatre presents ‘Nutcracker’ for 29th annual year

Repertory Dance Theatre’s production of the holiday classic “Nutcracker” comes to the stage for the 29th year at 2 p.m., Dec 12 and 13, Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown.

Former Joffrey Ballet star and faculty member at DeSales University, Trinette Singleton, has been RDT’s co-artistic director for 13 years. She and Jennifer Haltzman Tracy, RDT executive and artistic director, partner with local dancers, musicians and guests to create a stellar performance.

It is a show which offers “a fluency that translates across the footlights to the audience,” says Haltzman Tracy.

The RDT production will feature both vintage and new choreography. “My mother and I originally choreographed the whole ‘Nutcracker,’” Haltzman Tracy says.

For the party scene in Act I, Haltzman Tracy’s mother, Dolly Haltzman, who founded RDT in 1987, wanted to involve all the characters in the dancing, not just the children, to portray a more festive occasion. “It was very important to my mom that the parent [characters] be involved.”

The role of Clara will be danced en pointe. Clara will dance with Drosselmeyer, her magical and mysterious uncle. “He really dances in our ‘Nutcracker,’” says Haltzman Tracy.

The role of Herr Drosselmeyer is performed by Allentown native, Eric Feinstein, who has taken part in RDT’s “Nutcracker” for more than 20 years. “It’s a real family affair,” Haltzman Tracy says of the show.

Haltzman Tracy’s daughter, Alexis Haltzman Tracy, a junior at the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts, will dance one of the roles of Clara. “It’s very exciting for Alexis. She’s thrilled,” Haltzman Tracy says, adding, “She was the youngest person we’ve ever had in the cast. She grew up around RDT and was a part of it.”

The other dancer playing Clara is Eva Munshower, a senior at Allentown Central Catholic High School. “She’s a delightful dancer,” says Haltzman Tracy, noting, “They both bring something different to the role of Clara. They can really make it their own.”

Matthew Harvey returns as the Cavalier to Madeline Jazz Harvey’s Sugar Plum Fairy. Cainan Weber, an Emmaus native and eighth grader at the Academy of the Arts, alternates with Luke Csordas, a sophomore at Emmaus High School, in the roles of the Nutcracker and Trepak.

Guest cast includes Felicia Cruz, an RDT alum and soloist and assistant artistic director of DanceSpora, as well as Daniel Mayo, a dancer with Philadelphia’s Ballet X. Mayo partners with Melissa Kropf, also an RDT alum and former dancer with American Repertory Ballet, in the exotic Arabian Dance.

The Act II divertissements have been enhanced. “We want to showcase the talent of our dancers,” says Haltzman Tracy. She speaks proudly about returning members of RDT, some of whom grew up in the company, went on to dance professionally, and have come back to perform in the “Nutcracker”:

“They are such incredible role models because they want to interact with the students. There are no divas. They share their gifts and help. They give their expertise, and something to aspire to.”

RDT’s Talent Identification Program awards dance scholarships to inner city youth. “One-third of our students are in the dance scholarship program,” Haltzman Tracy says, emphasizing that it’s important to her that the company gives to the community: “Eighty percent of the schools don’t pay to see [our show.]”

Generous donors make this possible, Haltzman Tracy mentions, including The Baker Foundation, The Homer Foundation, Trexler Trust, Crayola and The White Foundation.

Funding has allowed Allentown Symphony Orchestra to provide live music for 16 years for RDT’s “Nutcrracker.” “We have a wonderful relationship with [conductor] Ron Demkee,” says Haltzman Tracy. “Live music brings out so much in the dancing.” Also part of RDT’s production is the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts choir.

RDT endeavors to unite Tchaikovsky’s grand score with premier guest artists and professionally-trained dancers in a ballet extravaganza that holds a sense of community and camaraderie. Says Haltzman Tracy:

“I hope that we make it feel that [our cast] is an integral part of this production.”
