Walter F. Williams
Walter F. Williams, of Bethlehem, died Nov. 28, 2015, at Sand Hill Cove, Palm City, Fla. He was born in Dover, Del. He was the husband of Joan Carey Williams for 65 years.
He earned a degree in civil engineering with honors from the University of Delaware; a degree from Harvard’s advanced management program; and honorary PhD’s from DeSales and Lehigh Universities. He was a member of Bethlehem Steel’s 1951 loop course. He was a distinguished military graduate of Delaware’s ROTC program and received a commission in the U.S. Army Reserve.
He was a first lieutenant and a reconnaissance and assistant battalion operations officer with the 45th Infantry Division artillery in the U.S. Army in Korea during the war. He was awarded a Bronze Star.
He worked for Bethlehem Steel Corporation in the plant engineering department, Lackawanna, Buffalo, N.Y. and was a plant chief engineer of construction for the Burns Harbor plant in Indiana. He was a vice president of the company’s shipbuilding division and a senior vice president of steel operations. He was a member of the board of directors. He was the president and chief operating officer and, in 1986, became chairman of the board. He retired in 1992 after more than 42 years.
He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Bethlehem, and of First United Methodist Church, Stuart, Fla.
He received the Gold Medal for Distinguished Service from the International Iron and Steel Institute; and the Gary Medal, the organization’s highest honor for distinguished service to the steel industry, from the American Iron and Steel Institute.
An Eagle Scout, he was a member and past president of the Minsi Trail Council executive board and president of Area 4, all of the Boy Scouts of America. He was awarded the scouting Silver Beaver medal, the National Distinguished Eagle Award and the Silver Antelope Award.
He was a president of Saucon Valley Country Club, and in his later years, a president of Hobe Sound Country Club in Florida.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jeffrey F. and Richard C.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Douglas E.
