Roberta Marcus retires from school board

Roberta Marcus, who served on the Parkland school board for 20 years, received recognition for her contributions to public schools from educators and elected officials at her last meeting Nov. 17.

Confident, knowledgeable, and articulate, Marcus worked tirelessly on behalf of every aspect of public education, including academics, the arts, student services, technology, and funding.

Her influence extended beyond Parkland throughout the state and on to the federal level.

She served as board president in 1998, 2001, 2003, 2014, and 2015 and was honored with master school director status in 2008.

Marcus was very active in the Pennsylvania School Boards Association and dedicated a year to presidency of that organization.

She appeared before the Commonwealth General Assembly and had roles on the legislative platform committee and the commission on effective school governance.

Marcus’ honors include a fellowship in school governance, the Timothy A. Allwein Advocacy Award, and a gubernatorial nomination to the state charter school appeal board.

Marcus earned the distinguished service award from the National School Boards Association and recognition from the U.S. House of Representatives for her Spirit of Volunteerism.

Marcus is vice chair of the Lehigh Carbon Community College board of trustees, co-chair of the Keystone State Education Coalition, and board member of the Community Music School.

Superintendent Richard Sniscak extended thanks to Marcus’ family who enabled her to focus on her work in education.

“Roberta has a genuine passion for the children of Parkland School District,” Sniscak said.

“Her legacy spreads throughout the state.”

He said thousands of students and a multitude of taxpayers benefited from Marcus’ efforts.

She formed relationships with legislators and brought recognition to Parkland throughout the commonwealth, Sniscak explained.

Proclamations, comments, and gifts were offered to Marcus throughout the evening.

On behalf of state Rep. Gary Day, R-187th, Karen Tamerler presented a citation from the state House of Representatives commending Marcus for her unwavering passion for public education.

In a video presentation, Congressman Charlie Dent, R-15th, spoke of Marcus’ leadership on behalf of public education.

“She’s done all this without compensation,” Dent said. “She did it for the kids.”

Kernsville Elementary School Principal Michael Gehringer extended comments to Marcus.

“You have been giving of yourself in so many ways to so many people,” Gehringer said. “Your fingerprints on this district will last a lifetime.”

Board members Mark Hanichak and Lisa Roth recalled how Marcus took them out to a diner after their election and gave some orientation on their roles as school directors.

Several board members noted Marcus’ frequent comment, “It’s all about the kids,” regarding board actions.

As the tributes drew to a close and after receiving two standing ovations, Marcus gave some final remarks.

“This is a team effort. You don’t do this alone,” Marcus said. “It’s a privilege to serve and be a part of this excellent school district.

“The decisions we make directly affect our classrooms. It has been an incredible journey. My work as a school director has been a labor of love.

“Thanks to my family. I couldn’t have done this without your support.

“Thanks to my Parkland family. I love you all and respect you tremendously.”

Before adjourning her final meeting, Marcus reminded everyone to keep informed on matters affecting schools and to take action as needed to preserve and promote public education.
