Zephs see some relief in PIAA enrollment
The PIAA unveiled their enrollment numbers for the next two-year cycle, beginning in the 2016-17 school year.
The anticipation for the numbers comes on the heels of the PIAA approving a new six class system in football, as well as in basketball, baseball and softball.
Boys and girls soccer, as well as girls volleyball will move to four classes. Field hockey moves to three classes and boys and girls lacrosse expands to two classifications.
Teams in all sports have until December 15 to decide whether they want to move up a classification.
For Whitehall, the changes should be prove to be beneficial, as the Zephyrs have dropped to 5A in sports like football, baseball and boys’ basketball, giving them a more level playing field when it comes to the district postseason.
It’s unclear how the football format will play out, as there are currently only four teams in the 5A classification.
In baseball and boys’ basketball, there’s a mix of Colonial League teams like Bangor and Southern Lehigh, along with the likes of Pottsville and Blue Mountain.
Central Catholic is also in the 5A mix in boys’ basketball.
The Zephyrs won’t see a difference in any other sports, as they’ll be competing against the same teams they have been for years.
