Freedom High School diving coach Jeff Zettlemoyer will be looking to his seniors, Madison Young and John McGinty, to push the envelope as the 2015-2016 swimming and diving season begins this month.
Both district contenders last year, Young and McGinty should have enough experience and skill to move up the leader board in 11-dive meets this year.
Young has all 11 dives and has been working constantly during cross country season which ended not too long ago.
“If she hits all her dives, she could win districts. She has upper degree of difficulty dives. Her toughest competitor will be Jess Hurlburt from Emmaus,” Zettlemoyer said.
McGinty also has 11 dives.
“He got his 2 1/2 last year, so he moved his degrees of difficulty up. He’s working on his forward 3 or 3 1/2. If he hits all his dives [at districts], he could go to states. There may be room at the top for him if he puts his mind to it,” said Zettlemoyer.
This Saturday, Young and McGinty will compete at the Cedar Crest Invitational, where they will do six dives apiece.
Two newcomers to the Patriots diving team will be senior, Megan Schupp, and freshman, Leigha Evans.
Schupp dove two years ago, swam last year, and is back to diving this year.
“Megan still has to get a couple dives. She’s working on her twister,” Zettlemoyer said. “Leigha is getting there. She needs one or two more. She needs her reverse.”
Madison Young returns to help lead the Freedom diving team.
