Whitehall golf team continues to grow

The takeaway for the 2015 golf season for Whitehall head coach John Conrad doesn’t rest in their win-loss record, but instead lies in their individual scores which saw steady improvement up and down their roster this year.

The Zephyrs won just one match this year, finishing 1-14, but each player shaved a number of strokes off their season average, making it a successful year in their progression as golfers.

“It’s really amazing what they’ve been able to accomplish in one year,” said Conrad.

He’s watched the program grow each season, and while their record is still not where he would like it to be, it’s a far cry from just the handful of golfers he had when he took over the program.

The Zephyrs only lose three seniors as Chase Hutterer, Rowen Martin and Jack Pastir graduate. That leaves them with a strong nucleus that returns next season.

That group is led by Patrick Skinner, who was their lone representative at the district qualifying tournament.

Skinner was also their top finisher at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference tournament, posting a 98.

Conrad said that Skinner possesses all the ingredients necessary for a good golfer and that’s he’s willing to work on his game to get to the next level.

“He’s definitely got his mind set on golf,” said Conrad. “It’s what he wants to pursue.”

Skinner, who was the team’s No. 1 golfer, was among those golfers who improved this season and Conrad believes that he’s just scratching the surface.

Ben Antonchak is another golfer who shaved a number of strokes off his average this season. He was their No. 4 golfer this season and Conrad believes that same improvement could be in store for his junior season.

On that list is also Tyler Ringenberger. Ringenberger is another sophomore whose game grew this season.

Juniors Ethan Meshach and Noah Zahradnik return as well, with both players looking to build on solid seasons, giving the Zephs additional depth.

Zahradnik had the best round in their win versus East Stroudsburg North, finishing with an 82, while Meshach fits into the improved golfer category that defined this season.

The optimism for the future continues with Rockie Scarl, Griffin Wampole returning, while freshmen Leah Coleman, Jaron Crosson, Joshua Mallory, Mark Matusinsky and Stephen Swiezak will have a year under their belts when they hit the links next year.

Conrad said that Matusinsky competed in six of their nine matches last season, giving them another golfer with varsity experience.

“He showed me that he was ready for it,” said Conrad. “He’s got a bright future if he sticks to it as well.”

Conrad said that Coleman competed in two matches this season, an athletic player who competes in field hockey as well during the fall.

This offseason will find the team working with the new equipment that will further help improve their game. Conrad said that they’ll be focused this winter on taking the next step by working hard in the offseason.

“We’ll just keep plugging away and get Whitehall where it needs to be,” Conrad said.
