Whitehall Township has prepared for the onslaught of winter weather woes by adding a storage shed filled with road salt and working with a different vendor for the 2015-16 winter months.
Last winter, the township had to scramble to obtain materials to make streets safe and roads passable.
Township commissioners were pleased Nov. 9 when Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. informed them a contract for the purchase of road salt has been awarded, and the road salt stocked at the township’s public works complex is ample for roads to be treated during the upcoming winter season.
“American Salt, whom we believe is much more reliable than last year’s vendor, was the successful bidder for Lehigh County,” Hozza said. “They have an automated ordering system, which was where last year’s vendor failed.
“The price is $71.10 per ton, which is significantly higher than last year’s $61.85 per ton. On numerous occasions, last year’s company failed to deliver salt as required, and the township ended up going out on its own and purchasing salt, which was $76.50 per ton,” Hozza reported.
In other news, during the township park and recreation board meeting last month, it again did not have a quorum; therefore, Whitehall Historical Preservation Society’s request for $3,600 was tabled since there was an insufficient number of members, and no one from the historical society was present.
The grant sought is for repainting work at the Grim Homestead.
