High expectations for LHS girls
Liberty High School’s girls’ basketball coach Becky Soto said the sky is the limit as for how far the Hurricanes want to go this season.
“We want to go game by game, and it doesn’t put limitations on them,” Soto said.
Soto is beginning her third season as head coach and is assisted by Terry Marcincin, Horace Jenkins, Hailey Cintron, Shelby Sferra, and Nicole Calabrese.
Together, they form the perfect team, each with his or her own strengths.
“The coaches rely on each other a lot, from conversation to dinners together. We lay our ideas out and fight for what we want,” said Soto.
The Hurricanes already know they will be graduating eight players this year, so developing the underclassmen is on their priority list, but getting from transition time to basketball season is a lot closer to the top.
“Kids are coming from other fall sports, the dynamics are changing from summer, and now everyone is fighting for five spots,” Soto said.
Two of those spots will be filled by key returners, Kaylin West and Maddie Capuano. Soto believes there will be pressure for West as the natural leader, for one thing, and maybe some for Capuano as the Hurricane senior tries to hit 1,000 points.
“The whole team has to be emotionally invested. We all have the same name,” said Soto, referring to respect.
Liberty’s strengths will be their tempo and their movement without the ball.
“Last year, our plays would break down, and they’d look to one person,” Soto said, “and it has to be up tempo to play their style.”
In one word, Coach Soto is excited about the upcoming season.
“I get to see these ladies, here, when they accomplish it. I want to be there in that moment with them,” said Soto. “Right now, this is their sanctuary. This is where they can let loose.”
