Kenneth E. Wessner

Kenneth E. Wesner, 92, of Bethlehem, died Nov. 23, 2015, in the Phoebe Home, Allentown. Born in Bethlehem, he was a son of the late Robert E. and Edna E. (Thomas) Wesner. He was the husband of Arlene V. (Druckenmiller) Wesner for 71 years.

He was a 1943 graduate of Bethlehem Technical HS.

He was a T/SGT in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. He was a radio operator-gunner on a B17 Flying Fortress heavy bomber with the 8th Air Force, 306th Bomb Group, called the “Clay Pigeons” stationed in Thurleigh, England. His squadron, the 367th, called “The Reich Wreckers” engaged in heavy bombing missions over enemy occupied Europe. He was awarded the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Good Conduct Medal, European and American Theater Service Medals with two Bronze Stars, and the Victory Medal.

He was a structural and civil engineering draftsman at Bethlehem Steel Corporation for 34 years, and retired in 1983 from the mining and projects engineering department. He continued to work for several more years in the same capacity for Lehigh Valley engineering firms.

He was a member of Christ Church U.C.C., Bethlehem, where he was an usher, choir and senior club member and played on the dart baseball team. He was a former member of the Emmanuel Evangelical Congregational Church, Bethlehem, where he was director of the youth Sunday school orchestra, Sunday school superintendent, and a vice chair of the building committee. He was a member of the board of trustees, the church choir, dart baseball team and the couplers group.

He was a member of the Hellertown American Legion Post 397, a Master Mason and former chaplain of the H. Stanley Goodwin Lodge #648, a 32nd degree Mason in the Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Allentown, and a member of the local Masonic High-Twelve Club.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Dale K. and his wife Janet and Carol J. and her husband Thomas Lutz, all of Bethlehem, Todd W. of Allentown and Kimberly Ann and her husband Gregory Seifert of Hanover Township; four grandchildren, Scott A. Wesner, Janelle A. Lutz, Allesyn A. Wesner and Robert G. Wesner; a great-grandson, Brandon S. Wesner; and a sister, Phyllis Raines of Allentown.

He was predeceased by a sister, Marion Stahl; a grandson, Ryan James Wesner; and a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth (Kleintop) Wesner.
