Police Chief Christman receives warm welcome

South Whitehall Township Police Chief John T. Christman received an outpouring of support from family, friends, police officers and public officials at the Nov. 18 commissioners’ meeting.

Resplendent in his dress uniform, Christman took the oath of office from Magesterial District Judge Jake Hammond. Soon, the sounds of music were heard as a bagpiper dressed in a red, plaid kilt strode up the aisle.

Police officers stood on both sides of the room, while elected officials, including District Attorney Jim Martin and Lehigh County Commissioners’ Chairman Brad Osborne, a former South Whitehall commissioners’ president, occupied seats in the hall.

Board President Christina “Tori” Morgan commented.

“On behalf of the Board of Commissioners and all South Whitehall staff, I congratulate you,” Morgan said. “You will serve and protect our residents and businesses.

“You will face challenges, and we know you are up to the task.”

She added Christman will also work to advance the police department.

Morgan said the room full of well-wishers demonstrated support of Christman in his new role as chief.

Christman began his service to South Whitehall as a patrol officer 23 years ago. He succeeds former Chief Thomas Toth, who retired in October.

Christman reflected on his new position.

“I’m just one member of a big team,” said the new chief.
