Katherine Bacher
Q: What grade are you in?
A: I am a senior at Emmaus High School.
Q: What is your favorite subject? Why?
A: Math and science are my favorite subjects. I like solving problems, doing labs and understanding how things work.
Q: Have you received any special awards or recognition?
A: I was named National Merit Semi-Finalist and AP Scholar with Distinction. I am a member of National Honor Society, have been on the Principal’s Honor Roll every semester of high school and won a “Passion for Science” award last year. I am a Scholastic Art Award Gold Key winner as well. My freshman year I was awarded the Paul Rockwell Diely Memorial Award for excellence in Honors English and Honors Social Studies. I was selected to participate in Lehigh University’s High School Scholar Program where I take a math class three days a week. I am also an athlete and was named the girls team MVP and League MVP last year in cross country and am a two-time state qualifier in both cross country and track.
Q: Are you involved in any extracurricular activities?
A: The extracurricular for which I am most involved is my athletics as I run 40 to 60 miles a week throughout the year. I am this year’s girls cross country team captain and I also run track in the winter and spring. I have volunteered at some of the Lehigh Valley Road Runner events as a way to support my sport and this community organization. I am a member of the robotics team and am vice president of our school’s Science Olympiad team. I have volunteered at the Da Vinci Science Center and spent six weeks last summer in Boston working as a research intern for an electrical engineer professor with his work on computer hardware security.
Q: What is your next goal after high school?
A: My goal is to attend a college offering a demanding and well-regarded engineering program that also has a competitive cross-country and track team.
Q: What would you say your biggest challenge has been so far?
A: I find it challenging to manage a demanding academic load, while at the same time trying to be the best athlete possible. With daily practices and five to six hours of homework each night, getting enough rest to be the best student and athlete I want to be can be difficult.
Q: What do you want to be remembered for?
A: I want to be remembered as someone who worked hard to achieve her goals.
Q: Who is in your family?
A: My parents are Ken and Dana Bacher and I have a dog named Leo.
Q: Do you have someone you look up to?
A: I look up to my parents because they follow their passions and advocate for things they believe in.
Q: Do you have any advice for your peers?
A: Challenge yourself.
