Whitehall Township observed Veterans Day Nov. 11 with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7293, Egypt, conducting somber ceremonies at three sites: the memorial plaza in Cementon, the World War I monument and Doughboy statue in Egypt and the Navy F-10 jet fighter memorial at the VFW post in Egypt.
Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. spoke briefly at the three sites, saying the world is unsettled.
Looking skyward at the Post 7293 memorial, Hozza said the dark clouds above are a reminder of the dark clouds in eastern Europe and the Middle East. Federal elected officials are faced with “tough decisions,” Hozza said, to keep the country safe and military personnel safe when sent to combat.
Post 7293 Commander Dennis Makovsky and post Official Nate Smith delivered poems and words of reflection at each site.
A bugler’s call began and closed each ceremony. “Amazing Grace” also was played.
Motorists passing the ceremonies blew their horns in appreciation of veterans and those hosting the programs.
As the ceremony came to an end at each location, the post’s rifle squad fired a volley of shots into the air.
