Tennis season comes to end

The Whitehall girls tennis season officially concluded last week on the playing surface at Nazareth Area High School.

The Zephyrs (10-6) entered the District 11 AAA Championships as the 7th seed and had to face Nazareth (15-1), the 2nd seed, in the opening round. They lost to the eventual champs 5-0, ending the 2015 campaign for the Zephyrs.

In the week prior to the Team Championships, they competed in the District XI 3A Doubles Championships held at Saucon Valley High School beginning on Oct. 14.

The Zephs were represented by three pairs of doubles teams, including Julia Solderitch and Nicole Peluso, Emily Yenser and Celine Asmar, and Samantha Nino and Emily Snyder.

Both Nino and Snyder and Yenser and Asmar advanced to the second round which was held the same day.

Nino and Snyder defeated the Parkland duo of Sabrina Ghosh and Jessica Marks, 4-6, 6-3, 10-4. Yenser and Asmar dispatched the pair of Devin Kagel and Haley White from Pleasant Valley, 6-0, 4-6, 11-9. Solderitch and Peluso lost their match to the Emmaus tandem of Elise VanOrmer and Michelle Gunn, 6-1, 7-6, (7-4).

All three matches went three sets, with Yenser and Asmar having to lace them back up against Elassa Jacobs and Kaitlin Grogg from Easton, while Nino and Snyder drew Patricia Yao and Madison Staiman from Parkland in the next round.

Jacobs and Grogg were the 3rd seed in the D-11 tourney and they defeated Yenser and Asmar, 6-2, 6-2, knocking them from the tourney. Nino and Snyder were ousted by Yao and Staiman in the next round, 6-1, 6-0.

The doubles team of Samantha Peterson and Madelyn Conrad emerged as the eventual champs, defeating Freedom’s Natalie Sinai and Kaitlyn Swint, 6-0, 6-1.
