Kylee setting her own pace

Kylee Cunningham understands the likely comparison to sisters Kayla and Kourtney, but she wants to set her own pace.

“Everyone knows what they have done and I am very proud of them,” said Kaylee of the accomplishments of her sisters. “But I don’t want to think I have to fill their shoes. I know people expect me to be able to do what they did. They have been a great inspiration to me and we all keep in contact to support each other.

“I know what I can do and I don’t feel any pressure at all.”

For the record, oldest sister Kayla set a new District 11 record for goals with 166 and overall points with 248. She is currently a sophomore at Temple. Sister Kourtney followed suit with 122 career goals.

In the meantime, Kylee slowly has progressed over the past two years, tallying 10 goals this past season in her junior year and was also named to the East Penn Conference First Team. She was an integral part of her team winning a district title last year and being a runner-up this past season.

However, like her sisters, Kylee surely has the family’s competitive edge.

“It wasn’t the kind of ending we expected and it wasn’t a happy one,” said Kylee about her team’s loss to Parkland in the district final. “But we are all very proud of what we did this season. There may have been more chemistry on this team than the other ones.

“We really all got along well. We probably went farther than most people expected us to do this year.”

Head coach Dave Weitzman was appreciative of her contributions.

“Kylee is an extremely gifted student-athlete,” said Weitzman. “On the field this season, Kylee kept many teams off-balanced with her quick feet. Her work rate was just exceptional and she helped set the standard for our team this year.

“She was certainly worthy of receiving first-team all-conference honors and I am looking forward to coaching her again during her senior year next season.”

As well as soccer, Cunningham also has played a key role on the Zephyrs’ basketball and track team. She began playing soccer at the age of five and basketball in the third grade. Track is her newest sport, as she began her freshman year running the 100, 200, and 4 X100 relay.

When she isn’t on a field or a court somewhere, Cunningham concentrates on her academics. She also enjoys working with special needs students in a designated school program.

She credits her motivation and desire to the constant support of her parents, Tim and Tammy, as well as grandparents Michelle and Thomas Haines, who all are usually in the stands.

“I’m busy, but I like it that way,” added Cunningham. “I’m looking forward to basketball and track to see what I can do and to help my teams succeed.”

Cunningham surely will take inspiration from her sisters, but she will carve her own niche.
