Kenneth W. Garrett
Kenneth W. Garrett, 80, formerly of Krumsville, Berks County, died suddenly Nov. 7, 2015, shortly after arrival at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.
Born in Summit Hill, the youngest of 11 children, he was a son of the late Thomas I. and Anna T. (Fleming) Garrett.
He was the loving husband of Marie E. (Kunkel) Garrett, to whom he married on June 18, 1988.
He was a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, Krumsville.
A veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving as a staff sergeant, and a graduate of the former Kutztown State Teachers College, now Kutztown University, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in secondary education, he was an algebra teacher for 31 years for the Kutztown Area School District.
He also coached the girls softball and track teams to state championships, and served as athletic director.
A member of Huguenot Lodge 377 F.&A.M., Kutztown, he also was a member of the Kutztown Fire Company, and a former member of Kutztown Lions Club.
Many will remember his charitable actions in Kutztown as a Cougar Card promoter for the Sports Hall of Fame, Kutztown High School Athletic stadium improvement organizer, and as a member of Kutztown HOBOS, (Help Others Before Ourselves).
His impact on his blended family, community and students will be long lasting and fondly remembered.
In addition to his wife of 27 years, he is survived by a son, Mark A., husband of Carolyn S. (Starr) Garrett, of Kutztown; daughters, Jane G., wife of Dean T. Kniss, of Kempton, and Kathryn L. Garrett, wife of Robert A. Ham, of Pittsburgh; stepsons Rick L., husband of Linda K. (Miller) Rutherford of Lenhartsville, Bruce D., husband of Heidi L. (Kunkel) Rutherford, of Blandon, Kerry P., husband of Tori L. (Fink) Rutherford, of Bethlehem; brothers Robert A., husband of Judith Garrett, of Corning, N.Y. and Donald R.. wife of Carol Garrett, The Villages, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Nov. 12, at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, 1343 Long Lane Road, Krumsville, with the Rev. Dr. Dennis S. Ritter officiating.
Interment will be in New Bethel Zion Cemetery, Kutztown. Friends may call 9:30-10:30 a.m. Thursday in the church.
