Some ways to protect your identity using tips from former bad guy Frank Abagnale

As the subject of the 2002 movie “Catch Me If You Can,” Frank W. Abagnale was a master at stealing identity all before the age of 21.

After cashing in millions in fraudulent checks, getting caught and serving jail time, he switched teams and began advising the FBI on how to outsmart the bad guys.

Today, Abagnale is one of the world’s most respected authorities on forgery, embezzlement and secure documents, and has joined forces with the AARP Fraud Watch Network to help you learn how to spot and avoid scams so you can protect yourself and your family.

Identity theft is still the most common type of fraud nationwide, so it’s more important than ever to protect your personal information.

Abagnale has shared these tips with the Fraud Watch Network:

• Shred all sensitive documents using a “micro-cut” shredder. It’s the only kind that makes it impossible for thieves to reconstruct your document.

• Don’t write checks for ordinary purchases. Everything a thief needs to steal your identity is right there! Use a credit card instead.

• Monitor your bank and credit card accounts online frequently, so you can report fraud as soon as it happens and have a better chance of recovering losses.

Remember, keep watch on your personal information, you are the first line of defense in preventing and detecting fraud.
