LHS, BC fight for D-11 title berths
Liberty is one step away from a potential rematch with Parkland Thursday night when the District 11 3A volleyball championship takes place.
The first priority in order, however, for the Hurricanes is getting past Nazareth in Tuesday night’s semifinals, which were played past Press deadlines.
Liberty (20-2) earned their way into the district final four by defeating Whitehall in last week’s quarterfinals in four games 23-25, 25-12, 25-19, 25-23.
After going through a hard-fought quarters matchup with the Zephyrs, Liberty was ready for what Nazareth was going to bring.
“Nazareth is a solid team comprised of seniors who have been playing together since middle school,” said head coach Missy Lynn. “They bring high energy and effort every match. They have some great hitters and distribute the ball well. They have a nice paced offense. I think we match up well.”
Liberty swept Nazareth in their only matchup of the season so far, winning 25-21, 25-20, 25-23 in the East Penn Conference tournament a few weeks ago.
That familiarity should have helped them going into Tuesday night. After Whitehall surprised them with a win in the first game last week, as well as pushing them in games three and four, Lynn hoped her team would come out with more energy against the Blue Eagles.
“I think we are a little tired,” she said of the Zephyrs. “We need to step up our level of play if we want to get back to the finals. Whitehall played with more heart and energy than we did. We knew Whitehall had a lot of talent, so I don’t think we underestimated them. Those girls really wanted the win and played great defense. We just came out flat and never really got into a rhythm.”
Bethlehem Catholic (15-5) took on top-seeded Notre Dame-GP in Tuesday’s semifinals as well.
The Hawks are hoping they can make a repeated trip to the district finals against either Blue Mountain or Central Catholic.
Becahi have won the last three district titles and look to keep their streak intact.
If Liberty won last night, they would likely have a rematch with Parkland in Thursday’s final, as the top-seeded Trojans are the favorite to come away with this year’s crown.
But Lynn was more focused on taking one game at a time.
“We aren’t taking anything for granted,” she said. “We’ve won against them [Nazareth] once, but I expect them to come out stronger than the last match. The EPC finals loss was disheartening for my girls. They put a lot of pressure on themselves and losing in three took the wind out of their sails. We need to get that back this week.”
