LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Kids up next for WHS

When the Zephyrs and Konkrete Kids collide this Friday, it will be two hungry football teams looking to end their Eastern Pennsylvania Conference season on a high note.

The Zephs haven’t lost to Northampton since 2009. They’ll be looking to keep that streak alive as they host the Kids in the final game of the season.

The Kids are currently winless in the EPC South division, and haven’t won since week one when they defeated William Allen. The Zephyrs have three wins this season, and are coming off a tough last-minute loss to Emmaus which ended their postseason hopes.

Head coach Brian Gilbert knows the stakes will be high as both teams will look to end their season with a victory, and with it bragging rights as the owners of the Cement Bowl Trophy.

For that reason, he’ll have to get his troops ready for a team that had expectations of a better season following two years as league vagabonds without a home stadium. But this year they’re back in a newly renovated Al Erdosy Stadium and they’d like nothing better than to end the EPC season with a win, bookending the year with victories.

“They’re going to play very inspired football,” said Gilbert. “They’re going to be very motivated.”

Gilbert said the Kids play hard every game, and have that blue collar mentality where they grind for 48 minutes. Whitehall can’t be on cruise control when the Kids invade Zephyr Stadium.

“We have to make sure we’re on top of our game,” he said. “We have to be ready.”

Gilbert said they need to be cautious of a team that’s hungry for another win and will look to spoil the Zephyrs senior night.

Gilbert said that Northampton runs a little bit of everything offensively, from a power I, to a no-back look, and even a spread. They feature Andrew Szerencsits, a senior running back who’s been the focal point of their offense this season. Quarterback Colin Schucker is another player the Zephs will have to keep an eye on as he is a dual threat in their offense. Junior wide receiver/running back Jovani Datis-Cordero is another skill player who can make plays. They also have an experienced offensive line that features three seniors.

That experience is also on the defense, with eight seniors starting on that side of the ball.

The Kids have yielded 318 points this season, while scoring 147. Conversely, the Zephs have allowed 287 while scoring 212.

The Zephs will look to senior quarterback Gianni Sinatore to guide them to a win in the last game the seniors will play in front of their home crowd. Sinatore is only 223 yards shy of 2,000 yards passing on the season. He’s also thrown for 10 touchdowns this year. Additionally, Sinatore’s rushed for 691 yards which leads the team. Tavion George is next with 324 yards.

Desmond Boykin leads all receivers with 37 catches for 628 yards and five TDs. Bryce Crum has seven catches for 220 yards, while Jackson Buskirk has hauled in 17 passes for 200 yards.

Defensively, the Zephs are led by Buskirk with 68 tackles, while Phil Reeves has registered 52. Kevin Allen leads the team in tackles for loss with 9.5.

Conor Ilgenfritz was almost automatic this season, making six of seven field goals and converting 19 of 21 extra points.

Gilbert said the message this week was simple. Play hard and get a win at home for the seniors.
