Allentown woman, 82, back in the ‘Burlesque’ act

“Burlesque To Broadway,” starring Quinn Lemley, lights up the Miller Symphony Hall stage at 8 p.m. Oct. 31, returning theater-goers to the days when burlesque was a mainstay at the Lyric Theater, a former name of Miller Symphony Hall.

Lemley and her divas sing and dance to a big band. The show features Allentown’s Penny (Roberts) Starr, 82, who once danced in burlesque shows at the Lyric. Starr dances with her granddaughter, Penny Starr Jr. the first week of June annually in Las Vegas and continues to dance in Melbourne, Fla., where she resides.

“I was the girl in 1957 who went away with the circus because I wanted to dance,” Penny Starr says in a phone interview.

After a year, Starr’s dance routines with Lucy The Elephant had run its course so she headed to the carnival where she worked the circuit until it reached Florida. Starr returned to Allentown, hired an agent and danced her way up and down the East Coast in burlesque shows.

“The girl that has it is the girl that holds the audience,” Starr says, adding, “I’m going to dance until I can’t dance anymore.”

There’s a VIP meet-and-greet before the show and a “Boolesque” after-party in the Rodale Community Room, with a costume contest. Judges, in addition to Lemley are costume designer Wendall Goings and Lehigh Valley Health Network Surgical Oncologist Lori A. Alfonse DO. There will be music, dancing, light fare and a cash bar with “Boolesque” cocktails.

Pink ribbon charm bracelets will be sold. A portion of the proceeds from bracelets and ticket sales will benefit LVHN’s “Pink Ribbon’ campaign.
