Voters in Whitehall Township are no strangers when it comes to referendum questions on the ballot. They require a simple yes or no answer and, in the past, have included issues such as changing the title of township executive to mayor and a proposed recreation center.
On Nov. 3, the electorate will cast three separate yes or no votes on referendum questions.
Three questions regarding vacancies for the office of mayor, township commissioner and township treasurer will be asked.
Simply the voters are being asked if the township home rule charter, which guides the governing of the township, should be amended to require that any person appointed to fill a vacant seat in the office of mayor, township commissioner or township treasurer be a registered member of the same political party as the person vacating the seat, except where the person vacating the seat has no political affiliation.
The question, though similar in scope, requires three separate votes, one for each office mentioned.
Township commissioners have discussed the matter at meetings earlier this year and agreed to let the voters make the decision at the polls.
