Girls ready for district playoffs

Whitehall head girls’ soccer coach Dave Weitzman is preparing his team for a District 11 playoff run.

Things have been pretty busy for the girls dating back to the end of the regular season.

The Zephyrs had an impressive 3-1 win over Emmaus, but they then dropped a 5-0 decision to Parkland. A few days later, Whitehall opened the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference (EPC) playoffs with a 3-0 shutout of Liberty before surprisingly falling to Pleasant Valley.

Weitzman noted how several of his girls also play field hockey or volleyball, and they had games on the non-soccer days, still piecing together an impressive season.

“Everything has been going great,” said Weitzman. “It was a tough week for us last week because we had girls playing two sports. But it is a credit to them to be able to keep playing at a high level.

“They have a great sense of desire and determination. We also have great chemistry here and they have really done a great job.”

Heading into the postseason, Weitzman will rely on the leadership and guidance of the core of his upperclassmen, all of whom have helped shape the landscape of the program the past few seasons.

Senior Ivanna Jones and juniors Taylor George and Cara Bonshak have set the pace for a club that continues to develop.

“We’re probably a little ahead of schedule,” noted Weitzman of his team’s progress. “We start three freshmen and we have a number of talented younger players. They have seen and understand what the older players have done to keep the program going ahead.”

Weitzman cited freshmen Erica Guliano, Kyle Saliby, and Hope Millets as being among those who have become steady contributors to the program.

“They have all been tremendous,” he said. “They have been able to step in and help us in spots. Their development has been a major plus for our program.”

Weitzman also acknowledged the veteran presence on the club. Together with the team’s budding stars, the Zephyrs appear ready for a deep postseason run.

“We have eight seniors who have been through this,” he said. “They have provided the leadership.

“Hopefully, they can keep us going with our younger players. We’re confident we can make some noise this season.”
