Stroudsburg gets OT goal to top Zephyrs

The Whitehall field hockey team’s quest for a shot at a league title was snapped by Stroudsburg as time expired in overtime Tuesday night.

The Zephs held the lead for most of the game, gaining a 1-0 advantage on Rachel Schannauer’s first half goal. But the second-seeded Mounties found the back of the cage to knot the game at 1-1 with 5:30 remaining in the second half.

With the score deadlocked, the two teams went into the 15-minute overtime. That’s when a Cunningham hit home the game winner with no time left on the clock, but this Cunningham happened to wear the maroon and white of Stroudsburg.

The goal came off the stick of Bridget Cunningham during an untimed corner, giving the Mounties the 2-1 victory.

The win propels the Mountaineers into the finals against Emmaus, a repeat of last year’s Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Championships which was won by Stroudsburg.

“We played well,” said head coach Jennifer Bodnar. “I don’t know if we played our best game, but they’re a talented team, and they really picked up the tempo a lot in the second half.”

Bodnar said that in the second half they got away from their strategy and game plan. That’s when the Mounties started to find some offensive rhythm.

She said she wasn’t happy with the second half, allowing the Mounties to push the tempo. Still, they were tied heading into the extra session and just needed that one goal to get them into the finals.

She said they had chances in overtime, but couldn’t convert.

“We just didn’t play our best game by any means,” Bodnar said.

While a chance at an EPC championship is no longer on the horizon, Bodnar said they’re going to learn from the game and get ready for a possible rematch with the Mounties in districts.

“Although we’re very disappointed we’re not playing in the championship, we’re going to regroup and then get ready for districts,” said Bodnar.
