A team of volunteers with Union Lutheran Church, Schnecksville, have made five weeklong trips to the New Jersey Shore over the past three years to help rebuild homes damaged by Super Storm Sandy, which hit Oct. 22, 2012.
On their most recent trip in October, eight volunteers traveled to the Long Branch and Highlands areas.
The crew included Charles Kopcho, Jim Hersh, Keith Lobach, Tim Remaly, Carl Allio, Carl Gillikin, Ron Bealer and Ron Bedics.
On this trip the team’s mission was to finish rebuilding the homes of two single moms.
The team painted, installed rails and balusters for stairways in the garage and the outside decks, installed power and ductwork for a clothes dryer, did some outside aluminum trim work, dug and installed a sump pump, and installed gate latches.
They also built a door to cover a crawlspace opening, installed a driveway flood light and built and installed a mailbox post.
In addition, the volunteers finished installing flooring and baseboard molding, door knobs, latches and stops, and heating vent covers, tore down damaged drywall and insulation, installed drywall and worked on installing glass shower doors.
At the end of the week, two grateful single moms and their families were able to move back into their homes after living in temporary accommodations for almost three years.
