Emmaus’ golf season ends at regionals

Another stellar Emmaus golf season came to a close Monday.

It’s a week earlier than the team usually ends its season as no Hornets will be competing at states this year.

The team not only earned league and district championships this season, but both individual Class AAA District 11 champs were Emmaus golfers.

“With the team championships that we won and the individual titles the kids won at the end of the year it was certainly a successful season,” said head coach Mike Mihalik.

Three Hornets competed in Monday’s PIAA East Region tournament at Golden Oaks in Fleetwood.

Kevin Caverly shot 81 and finished tied for 35th place in a field of 50 players. He missed a playoff to earn a spot at states (top 25) by three strokes.

Emmaus’ Max Harrington, who won last week’s District 11 Class AAA individual championship, shot 85 at regionals.

Harrington and Caverly are both seniors who helped the Hornets wins titles every year of high school. Their high school careers ended with Monday’s event.

“There’s always kids that it’s tough to picture Emmaus golf without,” said Mihalik. “Max and Kevin are certainly in that category.

“Four years have gone by real quick. I remember them as little freshmen that couldn’t hit the ball real far. And here they are today. I’m real proud of them. I’m proud of the four years they’ve had in the program. They should both be very proud of their career.”

Emmaus’ other district champ, junior Sam Frintzinger, shot 88 at regionals. It was uncharacteristic for a player that averaged a couple strokes under 80 for the season.

“She just wasn’t herself out there today,” Mihalik said. “It’s unfortunate. It’s just bad timing. But there’s always something that can be learned so hopefully she can learn something from this and be back next year and make it to states.”

The lowest rounds of the day were a pair of 68s that tied for first in Class AAAA by Gus Minkin of Central York and Kyle Vance of Methacton

District 11 champ William Mirans of Notre Dame (East Stroudsburg) shot the low round in Class AA boys with a one-over par 73.

Central Catholic’s Franca Hurtado won the girls Class AA tournament with a 79. Radnor’s Gabby Kim shot 74 to take medalist honors in Class AAA girls.
