Coplay Sports Inc. will have a board of directors meeting at 7:30 p.m. this evening, Oct. 15 at its field house off Sixth Street. The public is invited to attend.

The annual community Halloween parade, sponsored by Coplay Recreation and Welfare Association, will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 20.

The parade route begins at Chestnut and Ninth streets, continues east on Chestnut to Second Street and ends south at Second and Hokendauqua streets.

Large crowds are expected to line the sidewalks, placing blankets and chairs out hours before the parade begins to get a front-row view of the parade.

Those signed up for the parade are asked to show up at 6:30 p.m. at the upper end of Chestnut Street to be assigned to one of the four divisions.

Music is always a major part of the parade. Whitehall High School Zephyr Marching Band will be the first musical organization. East Hills Middle School Band is returning for a fifth year. Allentown Almost Marching Band and Rajah Temple Oriental Band are also marching.

There is no judging; instead, each organization, float, band, Scout troop, etc., are given a monetary donation for participating. At the end of the parade route, Coplay Saengerbund will be at the pavilion, providing hot dogs, birch beer and snacks.

The parade’s roots go back to the 1950s when Coplay Recreation and Welfare Association held its first Halloween parade, chaired for many years by Robert A. Hauke.

RCN will not be televising the parade. The rain date for the parade is Oct. 27.

The orange cones on the entire length on the south side of the Coplay-Northampton Bridge are not a sign that demolition of the bridge and construction of a new bridge are approaching soon. County crews are patching areas with blacktop as cold weather is not far off.
