Pool repairs to start

The Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners on Monday gave its approval in a unanimous vote to award Mid-Atlantic Commercial Aquatics, Trenton, N.J., a $190,470 contract for repairs to Parkview Pool, Hokendauqua.

The pool incurred serious damage from last winter’s weather to the tile and sides of the pool. Temporary emergency repairs allowed the pool to be opened to the public this summer.

Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. said some of the work will be done before winter sets in; the remaining work will get underway in the spring. The Lafarge Fund will be used to pay for the work.

In other news, the board established a no-parking zone along both sides of Spring Mill Road, southeast of Suncrest Circle and extending 255 feet to the northeast. Commissioners Philip Ginder and Gerard Palagonia abstained from voting due to a conflict of interest. Both are members of Egypt Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7293, located off Spring Mill Road.

A 35 mph maximum speed limit was approved for Fairmont Avenue, between Fifth Street and Fullerton Avenue. A resident of the Fairmont Avenue neighborhood went before commissioners at previous meetings stating pedestrian safety is an issue because of speeding motorists.

Hozza will release today, Oct. 15, the township’s tentative 2016 budget. It is required by the township’s Home Rule Charter that it be made public on the date mentioned. It is not expected to include an increase in the real estate tax levy.

Additionally, Commissioners President Linda Snyder said the board will hold public hearings on the administration’s budget on Oct. 27, 28 and 29. A vote on the budget will take place at the December meeting.

Ginder said the Ironton Rail Trail Oversight Commission may be forced to discontinue its popular fall trolley/bus fundraiser since there is no longer such a vehicle running. Jeffrey Dutt, who attended the meeting, mentioned a company in Upper Black Eddy may have a vehicle.
