Liberty girls beat Becahi
Bethlehem Catholic’s first goal of its girls soccer game against Liberty served as a wake-up call to the Hurricanes, resulting in their 5-2 victory over the Hawks last week.
“It really got us heated, and we wanted to win,” said Liberty captain, Julia Mello. “It was a good game, and we came out hard, and we were good at bringing it back.”
Dana Neupauer scored first on an assist by Claudia Bento for the Hawks before Erika Peters tied the game on a penalty kick. Soon after, Mello put the Hurricanes ahead.
“The ball was just rolling out through the 18,” Mello said.
Liberty had two more goals in the first half; the first, when Cailey Sanchez scored on an assist by Peters, and the second, when Olivia Askerneese scored on an assist by Ally Lynott.
In the second half, both teams missed good scoring opportunities. Becahi took three successive shots on goal with 23:30 left, but five minutes later, Askerneese scored for the Hurricanes again, this time on a cross from Merve Okumus.
Zoe Tauriella had the final goal for Becahi.
Liberty coach Scott Rodenbach said, “I give Beca credit. They hung with us. We let them do a lot of stuff. This was an ugly win.”
At this point in the season, Rodenbach is looking ahead to the post season.
“We need to be able to handle Easton and Parkland, taking better ball control. A game like today, we made mistakes with the simple stuff, passes, runs. I think we’re better than that,” said Rodenbach.
Citing an early season loss to Central Catholic as a better-played game, Rodenbach is looking for that intensity as the season winds down.
“I thought we dominated Central Catholic, but we couldn’t score,” he said. “Stroudsburg was our best overall game. They didn’t stop running, but we made good runs and good passes.”
