Boys clinch D11 berth

For much of the season, Whitehall’s boys soccer team appeared to be in pretty good shape, until the offense went AWOL, sending the Zephyrs into a three-game losing skid.

But the Zephyrs (8-5-2) accomplished one of their season goals of qualifying for the District 11 playoffs after Tuesday’s 3-2 win over Nazareth.

The Zephyrs jumped out to a two-goal advantage, only to see the Blue Eagles erase the deficit and tie the game. With about nine-minutes left to play, Nejmi Kara fired a laser past Nazareth goalie Brandon Long and the Zephyrs came away with the win.

Whitehall was shutout by Pleasant Valley, Emmaus and Parkland, three teams that can cause problems for their opponents offense.

The three-game skid negated the momentum gained through a three-game winning streak over Northampton, East Stroudsburg South and Pocono Mountain West.

Ironically, the three wins came just prior to the three losses. Going back even further, the Zephyrs had a five-game unbeaten streak that started with over Nazareth, followed by a tie against Easton.

With games at Northampton (4-10) and home against Emmaus (13-1-1) and Parkland (10-2-2), Whitehall has a tough road for the rest of the season.

Playing at Parkland last week, Whitehall’s leading scorer, Javaughn Hussett was constantly marked by the Parkland defenders who sought to make him a non-factor.

The result was a 3-0 win for the Trojans, with the final goal by Josh Kiser coming right at the buzzer. Tyler Madeira scored twice for Parkland.

“They did a lot of things right today,” said Parkland coach Patrick Birns of Whitehall’s play. “We had to adjust some things that we were doing and they kept coming at us. You have to credit Madeira, because he found the net a couple of times against a tough defense.”

With three games remaining, the Zephyrs are going to have to play some furious soccer down the stretch to make the EPC Playoffs.

Once they’re into districts, anything can happen and that team that fought through a five-game unbeaten streak could show up again and surprise some teams down the road.
