Student nurses assist ill bus driver
A bus driver, who had a heart attack while transporting the Moravian College women’s soccer team on Sept. 19, was helped by nursing students and staff while en route to a game at Johns Hopkins University.
During the trip, the bus began swerving into different lanes and then abruptly pulled over to the side of the road. Soccer coaches Jeff Ykoruk and Kirsten Schall contacted 911. Nursing students Marlene Lopes and Hannah LaFronz assessed the driver’s condition, relayed it to the coaches, who gave the information to the 911 operators. The ladies placed the driver in different positions to help him breathe and administered an inhaler.
The bus driver was taken by ambulance for medical attention, and the players were escorted by a police officer to a local diner. The Trans-Bridge bus company sent another driver to return the players to the Moravian College campus.
