LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Volleyball keeps rolling

The Whitehall girls volleyball team keeps rolling right along, hanging up Ws as they approach the midpoint of their season.

They’ve currently won five games in a row, the last of which was a 3-0 victory over Pocono Mountain West. That win pushes their record to 8-2 overall and 6-2 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. That places them in a three-way tie for third place in the Skyline division, sharing that spot with Allentown Central Catholic and Emmaus.

Head coach George Cowitch said that they’ve been playing really well, and have been getting progressively better as the season continues.

“We’re starting to put everything together,” he said.

After taking over the team this season, he knew he had the foundation for a successful season. It would just take time to jell, especially on offense. At this juncture, he sees their offense starting to assert itself, helping them to spearhead this current winning streak.

“We’re really starting to click on offense,” said Cowitch.

Monday’s game was an example of that offensive ascendancy as they won 25-3, 27-7, 25-7. Kristen Spengler filled up the stat sheet with eight kills, six assists and five aces. Cristal Fernandez added six kills, while Emily Castro had 13 assists and three aces.

Taylor Rummel was sharp from the service line, recording seven aces, while Amelia Ballard also had seven aces in the win. Finally, libero Korin Koehler had 11 digs.

Cowitch said that defense has been carrying throughout the season. They haven’t allows many balls to hit the floor, and with Spengler roaming the front line, they have a legitimate shot blocker on the court.

He also said that their ability to consistently get the ball back over the net adds to their opponents frustration, often leading to unforced errors.

“That’s a good thing for us,” Cowitch said.

In those last five matches, the Zephs haven’t lost a single game. That’s 15-0 over that span. However, their upcoming matches feature division opponents where games will tend to be much tighter. That begins Thursday when they travel to Emmaus.

In last week’s game versus Eastburg South, the Zephs swept the Cavaliers, 25-7, 25-12, 25-8. Spengler once again led the way with six kills. She also notched 11 assists with her strong floor game. Fernandez had five kills and 13 digs, while Koehler tallied 11 digs. Rummel continued to blister the ball from the back line, recording four aces.
