Hornets look to break 3-game losing streak

During the first half of last Friday night’s game against Nazareth, it looked as though Emmaus was going to find itself on the winning side of things. Kyle Boney was running the ball with somewhat ease (157 yards and 4 TD’s), and the Hornets were controlling the tempo. Emmaus seemed poised to get to .500 with a home win.

But then the Blue Eagles offense took over and didn’t stop scoring, and Emmaus couldn’t find anymore ways to score, as they fell 49-36.

This Friday night, the Green Hornets look to bounce back in front of their home crowd once again, facing a 3-1 Liberty team coming off a dominating 42-7 win against Whitehall last weekend. Th Hurricanes’ only loss came in week three against Nazareth.

The Hurricanes showcase a high-powered offense, showing off their skills in scoring the first 28 points in the win over the Zephyrs.

Quarterback Doug Erney accounted for four of the six touchdowns. He threw for 154 yards and three scores, and rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Emmaus ead coach Randy Cuthbert knows the type of player he will be facing Friday night, and is trying to figure out ways to stop him.

“They have excellent players over there,” Cuthbert said. “But they have a really good one in [Erney]. He was good last year, but got even better this year. He makes their offense go.

“Their defense has some play makers, too. They’re going to give us some problems. We need to run the ball well to have a chance.”

If Cuthbert can run the same formula as last weekend and Boney puts forth the same effort, the Green Hornets will be right in it with Liberty.

The Emmaus defense will also be tested Friday night. After not being able to slow down the Blue Eagles offense, the Hornets are going to have their hands full with what the Hurricanes can bring to the table.

The Hornets have lost three straight games after a season-opening win over East Stroudsburg North.

A win on Friday night could go a long way in turning this season around for Emmaus (1-3 overall, 1-3 EPC).
