Boys team just needs fine-tuning
Every team has some things to work on, but the Emmaus boys soccer team is generally at a point where it’s more a matter of fine tuning than a full work load of things to fix.
The latest example was a 4-0 win over Whitehall Monday night at Memorial Field. Noah Bacon led the way with two goals, both set up on corner kicks by Kacper Grycel.
The two teams battled for just over 21:00 in the first half before Jon Heberlein poked one past Whitehall goalkeeper Aaron Sierra for a 1-0 lead.
Later in the first half, the Grycel-to-Bacon connection started to hit.
Their first goal came with 11:26 left in the first half and then four minutes later, when Grycel sent a ball in front of the net at the perfect height for Bacon, the tallest player on the field, used his head to redirect the ball toward the net and past Sierra as Emmaus (9-0-1, 10-1-1) moved out to a 3-0 lead at the half over the Zephs (5-4-1, 7-4-1).
“I got the goals, but give it all to Kacper Grycel on the corner kicks,” said Bacon. “He sent the ball in and they were just easy headers. I’m 6-4, so if he’s playing the ball that well, it’s a goal every time. It’s just great stuff from Kacper.”
Stephen Groh added a goal almost midway through the second half that would cap the scoring. Groh also assisted on the goal by Heberlein earlier in the game.
Emmaus out-shot Whitehall 17-5 with goaltender Dylan Sosnow turning away all five shots.
“We’re seeing a little more consistency in the last week,” said Emmaus head coach John Cari. “I thought we moved the ball well. All our mids did well. Kacper had two assists. Noah had two goals and Dakota helped move the ball. I’m pleased with our efforts tonight.”
Both Cari and Bacon acknowledged that there are always things that a team can improve on. The team continues to stress their theme of “Finish” this season, referring to falling short of a district title in each of the last three seasons when they lost the district championship.
For Cari, finishing also refers to making more out of all the shots they’ve been able to get.
“We’ve got to be sharper, continue to really move the ball,” he said. “We need to finish a little more in the final third [of the field]. We left a lot of shots out there and we need to finish more and get some of those, but we’ll fine tune that before Wednesday.”
“There’s always stuff to improve on, but right now, we’re rolling,” said Bacon. “On defense, we could probably pick it up a little bit, but everything is rolling, everything is working, so we just need to keep it going.”
A big test comes Wednesday when Emmaus plays Central Catholic (7-2, 9-2) at the Lehigh County Sports Fields under the lights.
The Vikings are currently third in the Skyline Division behind Emmaus and Parkland and are looking to send a message that they’re ready to climb higher in the division.
The problem for Central Catholic is that since Cari took over as coach, the Hornets have gone 20-1 against their division foes.
“We know that they have it circled,” he said. “They have been looking at us and really looking to make that step and make a difference.
“I have the utmost confidence that we’ll be ready for them. We know how hungry they are to prove themselves and I think it would be a nice notch for us if we could take care of that and create some separation for us with a win.”
