Team approach working for boys
Through their first eight games, Whitehall’s team approach has been working. The Zephyrs had a 5-2-1 record, one that was by all accounts one of the best starts in recent years.
The Zephyrs have been getting it done offensively as they generated 21 goals over the stretch.
“Our whole team has been playing well,” said head coach Chris Bastidas. “We are really working well as a unit. It has been everything that I could ask for. We have had a number of players stepping it up for us.
“We also have been scoring goals and that’s what we focused on before the season.”
Bastidas pointed to a recent stretch in which the squad posted a 2-1-1 record in divisional battles with Nazareth, Parkland, Easton, and Allentown Central Catholic.
“That was a big week for us and we got some good results,” he noted. “We obviously wanted to win all four games, but we picked up two big wins and we almost had three.
“We worked on some new formations and our forwards had more action up front.”
Leading the charge has been senior Javaughn Hussett, who had nine goals and five assists through the first eight games. Fellow seniors Mike Saccani and Anthony Kleckner also have provided some scoring punch and leadership in the process.
“Javaughn (Hussett) really leads our team,” said Bastidas. “He has been a scorer and an overall leader out there. He has been doing a really nice job for us.
“Mike (Saccani) has been making some big plays for us, and Anthony (Kleckner) has been our top assist guy and has been playing well.”
Senior Javy Rodriguez is expected to return to the team soon from an injury. Goalie Aaron Sierra also has been a steadying force in the nets all season for the Zephyrs.
“We have a good chemistry with this team right now,” said Hussett. “We are out there having fun, and we all believe in each other. We know we can go far this year.”
Just missing the district playoffs last season, Whitehall will look to soon place a clamp on a postseason berth. However, Bastidas knows it won’t be easy.
“We’re playing with a lot of confidence right now,” added Bastidas. “We have been scoring, but we are playing a good overall game. Our goal has been to get to the district playoffs and we are making our way there.
“But we know we still have some work to do.”
