Take a ‘Stroll Along the Trail’
Whitehall Township will hold its second annual Stroll Along the Trail event 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 27, providing the public an opportunity to get to know the many historic sites surrounding the Ironton Rail Trail. In addition to the varied programs and organizations participating, the event for the first time will allow participants to learn about the Mickley-Prydun Farmstead, a gem in the township’s rich history.
Commissioner Phillips Armstrong initiated the stroll in 2014, which now the township recreation department runs under its umbrella of other annual programs, such as the fall parade, holiday caroling and tree lighting.
Points of interest along the Ironton Rail Trail from Ruch and Chestnut streets, Stiles, to Hokendauqua Park & Playground are scenic, informative and full of surprises, according to the trail’s members.
Whitehall Historical Preservation Society’s members will be present to relate the town’s history and answer questions about the Mickley-Prydun Farmstead, Tate Meadows and Millen Conservancy, which border the Ironton Rail Trail and Coplay Creek.
Also, free blood pressure testing will be performed by Rite Aid, and free flu shots will be given to those showing the following medical cards: Highmark, Medicare, Tricare, Aetna, United Healthcare, Medicaid, (AmeriHealth and Gateway) and Cigna.
The Whitehall High School Art Club will have its art work displayed along the trail.
The Ironton Rail Trail Oversight Commission will provide information on the trail and will sell hats and sweatshirts; Whitehall Lions Club will have a hot dog stand; and Fitness Central Cycling, Schnecksville, will promote bicycle safety.
Free recycling bags also will be distributed by the Whitehall Area Chamber of Commerce. Information tables will be set up by Communities That Care and Trout Unlimited-Hokendauqua Chapter.
The public may also register to win one of four free pizzas from Papa John’s.
