Liberty girls soccer continues to make strides

Win or lose, the confidence of Liberty High School’s girls’ soccer team is building game-by-game, with a record of 3-2 to start the season, as of Press deadlines this week.

Senior captain, Erika Peters, said, “I think we finally found our team. We haven’t had this good a record this early. It’s a confidence booster.”

Peters has been the main scorer this season, last Friday, scoring two goals within minutes of each other in Liberty’s 3-1 victory over East Stroudsburg North, and scoring three goals in the Hurricanes’ 3-2 win against Stroudsburg.

“She’s the machine,” said Liberty coach Scott Rodenbach.

Peters’s first goal last Friday came on an assist by Merve Okumus.

“I always know she’s on the end of the ball,” Okumus said. “It’s my job to cross it in.”

Peters’s second goal was on a restart kick.

“My coach said I’m looking for you to score. It feels extremely accomplishing that I’m able to do that,” said Peters. “The cross was beautiful.”

Liberty’s first goal, by Olivia Askerneese, also came from an assist by Okumus.

“It was a really good breakaway ball to center from the middle,” Askerneese said. “I think we have so much potential this year, and we’re showing we’re not who we used to be, and I’m proud of us.”

Jessica Becker had seven saves for the Hurricanes.

Also last week, Becahi lost to Stroudsburg 3-2 and East Stroudsburg North 4-0.

Freedom defeated Pocono Mountain West 5-2. Goals were scored by Mary Boglioli, who had two, Yasmine Herrera, Jaiden Coyne, and Ava Markle. Emmy Joseph and Brianna Vera had two assists.
