Boys pick up victory
The Whitehall boys and girls cross country teams competed in a meet at Easton with Nazareth and Northampton.
The girls suffered two, heartbreaking losses by just one point - falling to the Kids 27-28 and the Eagles 28-29. The Rovers topped Whitehall 15-50
Katie Bacher of Emmaus won the girls race in 19:10. Emmaus and Central Catholic also competed but are Whitehall’s buddy schools.
Autumn Dragovits was the Zephs highest girl finisher coming in 15th at 22:01. Hannah Gill was 23rd in 23:01 and Juanita Flores was 30th in 23:18.
Rachel Herr was 43rd in 23:48 and Ashlee Brosky 44th in 23:49.
“It was two tough losses by a total of two points,” said head coach Mike Lelko. “The girls ran an awesome, gutsy race in some warm conditions.”
The boys did pull off a win, knocking off the Kids 28-31 but falling to Nazareth 22-36 and Easton 15-50.
Kevin Lapsansky was the overall winner in 16:36.
Whitehall’s highest finisher was Andrew Hawk in 18:30, coming in 15th. Elliot Miller was 32nd in 19:22.
“Junior Andy Hawk had a strong top 20 finish (140 finishers) in leading the boys team,” Lelko said.
Senior captain Calvin Schneck was rested in this meet, as he is dealing with some knee pain.
David Labib was 44th in 19:46, Gavin Wood was 45th in 19:48 and Caleb Staub was 46th in 19:54.
Whitehall girls did pick up two wins to open the season at Emmaus, knocking off Pocono East 20-43 and Pocono West 18-45. The girls fell to Pleasant Valley 22-33.
Bacher once again took the top spot for the girls in a time of 18:58.
Dragovits was 10th with a time of 21:39. Gill was 13th in 22:06. Brosky was 21st in 22:46 and Herr took 24th in 22:59.
“Autumn Dragovits led the girls with an impressive top 10 finish,” Lelko said. “Gill has been a very strong number-two girl with help from Brosky and Herr to get two wins against the Pocono Mountain teams.”
Alex Dorner was 29th, Casey Cunningham was 35th and Caroline Martin was 36th.
The boys also defeated both Pocono teams, topping East 24-32, West 16-44, but falling to the Bears 25-30.
Seth Slavin of PV took the top spot in 16:50, but Whitehall had three, top-20 finishers. Hawk took 15th, Miller was 17th in 18:53 and Daniel Jablonski 18th in 18:55.
Staub was 27th in 19:16, Labib 38th in 19:47 and Wood 40th in 19:55.
After both meets, the boys are 3-3 and the girls are 2-4.
