BC wins, LHS falls
Bethlehem Catholic High School’s boys’ soccer team won its first game of the season while Liberty lost its first game last Wednesday.
Becahi’s victory was a 4-0 win over East Stroudsburg North.
Matthew Shaffer scored in the first half on an assist by Antonio Tavares. In the second half, Tavares scored on a penalty kick, and Tony Guzman had assists for John Corley and Shaffer.
Liberty’s defeat was a 1-0 loss to Pocono Mountain East.
Hurricane midfielder, Matthew Collins, said, “We’re very good; we just played a very good team. There’s going to be a loss. I didn’t expect to go undefeated.”
Marvin Roca scored the only goal of the game in the first half for the Cardinals.
“We’ll get back on the practice field tomorrow. I don’t think we’ll have a problem,” said defender and captain, Colin Jupina.
Jupina went one-on-one with Pocono Mountain East forward, Douglas Goitia, more than once last Wednesday.
“He’s a very good player, but if you could take him out of the play...He’s been one of the toughest,” Jupina said.
Liberty took four shots on goal within the first few minutes of the second half, including one by Trevor Koski that just missed after Lloyd Netherlin got by three Cardinals.
With 30 minutes left, Liberty coach Jason Horvath instructed the Hurricanes to move faster in the midfield. A Pocono Mountain East injury stopped the clock at 8:56, and some Liberty players went over to the sideline.
“The guys could see everything from the bench. They were pretty helpful,” Collins said. “I felt if we stayed calm, we could’ve put a couple passes together. We kick up and hope for the best, but hope isn’t what we need.”
Netherlin and Abe Meral each attempted to score within the last seven minutes.
Also last week, the Hurricanes defeated East Stroudsburg North 5-0. Collins had one goal and two assists, Colin Muller scored three goals and had one assist, and Chase Tackett had one goal.
