BC golf playing well

Heading into their postseason, Bethlehem Catholic’s golf team hopes to extend their regular season success.

Beginning this week, the Hawks have an overall 11-4 mark. It has been a campaign with plenty of high notes and high expectations for the future. They finished their regular season with matches against Pen Argyl and Central.

“I have been pleasantly surprised,” said head coach Tim McGorry. “This has been a nice season for us. This has been far beyond my expectations.”

Leading the pack is senior Nick Maff, who is a two-time District 11 title holder as well as Eastern Pennsylvania Conference champion.

Maff also won the College Prep Golf junior Tournament in June.

“Nick is Nick,” said McGorry. “He is just such a great player.

“He has shot in the 60s and is consistently in the high 60s and low 70s. “He helps set the pace for the rest of the team.”

Sophomores Chad Sodl and Sean Costello have both progressed throughout the season to become contributors.

“They both really work hard,” noted McGorry. “Chad (Sodl) worked all summer on all aspects of his game. Sean (Costello) also has done so many good things out there. They both will continue to grow.”

Senior Jake Smedley has also bloomed this year. Fellow seniors Jackson Pulley and Dave Andelucci have been developing this season. Junior Colby Treadwell has made an impact in his first season.

“Jake has been coming around,” said McGorry. “He has been effectively in the high 70s and low 80s for us. Jackson didn’t start playing until last year. He has put forth a lot of work and effort. Dave has also come into his own this season. Colby (Treadwell) shoots in the 90s, but he’ll have that score down in the 80s.

Maff will be the Golden Hawks lone qualifier in districts after he and his teammates compete in the EPC tournament.

Whatever the outcome, though, it has been a good ride,

“I always tell these kids that they will be scratch golfers when they are in their mid-20s,” added McGorry. “It has been a fun year. Nick will be our lone district qualifier because of average. We had 11 matches before Labor Day, and this season always appears to go very fast.

“These kids are so easy to coach. We will lose Nick (Maff) and the other seniors and it will hurt. But we’ll have a good core back and we should ready to roll.”
