Tennis team keeps collecting the wins coming
The hits just keep on coming for the Whitehall girls tennis team.
Their latest stop on the hit parade was a visit to Pocono Mountain East High School. They defeated the Cardinals 6-1, raising their season record to 7-1.
So far the only blemish on their record is a 5-2 loss to Easton. The Red Rovers came into the match 3-1 with a win over Parkland included in that mix.
Head coach Sean Devine has them pointed in the right direction. He has a mix of youth and experience that so far has them in the middle of the pack in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.
However, Devine said that their No. 1 singles player, Eiman Nazif, has been dismissed from the team. Her departure leaves them in a bit of sticky situation since that leaves them a player short in their singles matches. Devine said that it isn’t simply a case of bumping up the remaining singles players since district seeding is decided upon a full body of work. Both Emily Yenser and Celine Asmar are now fully entrenched in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively, and any movement would hamper their seeding positions. That means an alternate solution will have to be found.
In the match against the Cardinals, Whitehall decided to forfeit the match, resulting in their lone loss against PME. At No. 2 singles, Yenser dispatched of Kayla Price is straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, while Asmar defeated Cristina Kazanas, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3.
In doubles action, the Zephs combo of Maria Tran and L. Roberts who won 3-0 after their opponents retired.
At No. 2 doubles, Samantha Nino and Emily Snyder won in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, while the No. 3 pairing of Julia Solderitch and Nicole Peluso won 6-2, 6-2. Finally the No. 4 tandem of Teresa Nappo and Emma Garneau won in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2.
In their match against Pen Argyl last week, the Zephs won 5-1. After Yenser dropped her match at No. 2 to Jordan Leh, Asmar picked up the team with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.
The pair of Nino and Snyder continued the winning ways for the Zephs, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. That was followed by the victorious duo of Solderitch and Peluso who won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.
